The Royal Agricultural University (RAU) has been presented with a scale model of the Augustinian Abbey of St Mary, in recognition of the University’s support of the Abbey 900 celebrations.
The festival of celebrations, which took place throughout 2017, marked the 900th anniversary of the founding of the Augustinian Abbey of St Mary in Cirencester by King Henry 1 in 1117. The RAU was honoured to be the first festival partner and also co-sponsored a number of events in support of the initiative.
On Monday (February 26) the Cirencester Civic Society presented a scale model of the Abbey to a number of people, in recognition of their significant contribution to the success of the Abbey 900 Festival.
Professor Joanna Price, Vice-Chancellor of the RAU, received the model on behalf of the University at a small ceremony at The Parish Church.
Speaking after the event, Professor Price said: “Abbey 900 was an inspirational local initiative which saw businesses and people from across Cirencester come together to celebrate the rich history of the town. The RAU is proud to have played a part in this successful festival and we very much enjoyed our involvement.”
Events which the RAU hosted included a Plantagenet Medieval Banquet, a National Association of Decorative and Fine Art Societies (NADFAS) Heritage and Arts Meeting and a concert.
