My RAU experience
Having been interested in agriculture and the rural landscape from a young age, the specialist nature of the RAU really appealed to me along with being surrounded by like minded people. Being a smaller university in a stunning rural setting made the choice to study at the RAU very easy. In addition I was impressed by the alumni destinations and further career prospects following the degree which was very important to me.
Small class sizes and a variety of societies and sports to get involved in make the RAU a great place to study, and with the student course representatives I feel the university really listens to feedback about the student experience.
What I gained from the RAU
One of the things I most enjoyed about the course was the variety of learning I was able to undertake. From aspects of commercial and residential valuations and law to agricultural law and forestry management, the course provided me with a really comprehensive overview of land and property management.
I undertook a 3 month placement at fisher German in Ashford. I mainly focused on the infrastructure sector, liaising with landowners and energy distributors to ensure construction and upkeep of critical infrastructure assets within the rural environment. This placement gave me an insight into working at a large firm as well as a look into infrastructure and its effects on rural land and property. I am now a Graduate Rural Estate Surveyor at RH and RW Clutton.
I would advise any student thinking about the course at RAU to consider the wide range of opportunities and careers available upon graduation.
