My RAU experience
Embarking on a career in agriculture was made possible after choosing to study for a degree in a subject I was, and still am, really interested in. The RAU FdSc Agriculture and Farm Management course gave me the opportunity to gain both practical experience and theoretical knowledge in a diverse and growing industry.
A particular draw to the RAU was its rural location and expertise in education for well over a century.
Having come from a non-farming background, it was vital to select a course which covered a variety of modules run by teaching staff who are experienced, approachable and willing to give advice. This is something I really value. A particular draw to the RAU was its rural location and expertise in education for well over a century.
What I gained from the RAU
The support I received gave me confidence and extended to assistance with job applications, which was helpful as, aside from making long-lasting friendships, finding employment was the main reason I chose to study for this degree at the RAU. The course covered a variety of modules over the years to incorporate the broad subject of managing an agricultural business. Assessment was predominantly coursework based which suited my style of learning.
Interest in a module in commodity marketing prompted me to apply for a Farm Trading role with Gleadell Agriculture Ltd (an agricultural merchant) and before graduating I started with Gleadell working in their Southern office. Working for Gleadell has enabled me to capitalise on the confidence and enthusiasm I gained whilst studying at the RAU; this is integral when undertaking my responsibilities as a Farm Trader.
