Advice for looking at different universities

Looking at a list of 106 UK universities to choose from when you are doing your A-Levels is a bit daunting and can be very scary.

Questions that students should ask at open days

1. How will the course be assessed?

A lot of courses will have 60/40 2-part courseworks, some will have an exam or two, but this is gradually being phased out.

2. How many students will be on the course?

Depending on the course you do. During first year you will share modules with other students so you may have up to 100-150 student together in the lecture hall. After this you will have smaller group sizes, from 15-30 depending on the course. Larger courses will have larger student group sizes.

How to pick a university

When considering a university there are many places you can get information from, and sometimes it can feel very overwhelming and confusing when trying to work out where you want to go. Here is a list of things you should consider when thinking about each university you potentially want to study at.

Currently, I am working towards an MSc in Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security at the RAU. It was an ideal place for me to hunker down and research, and has allowed me to delve into the world of agriculture at both the global and local levels.

University health centre

The health centre is available for medical advice, routine treatment or attention for illness or accident while you are at the University.

Location 

The health centre surgery is located in the corner of the Quad (opposite to the entrance of the Tithe Barn and to the right of the large wooden door leading to the main reception). 

Academic Support

Higher Education can be a big leap from ‘A’ levels or a career change pathway. As well as attending lectures, seminars and tutorials, you will also need to be self-motivated during your own private study time. But don’t worry, as long as you’re committed there is plenty of support on offer to help you on the path to success.

Personal tutors

You will be allocated a member of academic staff who will be your Academic Support Tutor (AST) for your time here.

Faith at the RAU

The aim of the multi-faith chaplaincy is to support all students and staff at the University, to support all faiths and none within “faith in the university”. To achieve this the chaplaincy provides additional associate chaplains of other faiths.

The University Chapel and Chaplaincy

The Chapel of St George the Martyr is situated in the Quad, opposite the entrance to the dining room. It is an ecumenical Christian chapel and is open to students for worship, music, reflection and meditation on a daily basis.

Student handbook, policies and procedures

The student handbook provides information about all aspects of university life.

It contains the sources of help and support available to you, sporting and social opportunities, accommodation and leisure facilities and the key regulations which apply to all students.

We hope you will refer to it regularly, throughout your time at the RAU, so that you can take full advantage of all that the University has to offer.

We want to make sure that your time at RAU is both rewarding and fulfilling. We all have times in life when we could do with a little extra support.
