Dragon’s Den star and leading surveyor both receive Honorary Fellowships from the Royal Agricultural University

Dragon’s Den winner Levi Roots has been made an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Agricultural University (RAU) for his contributions to entrepreneurship and food. Chartered surveyor Julian Sayers received the same honour in recognition of his long career advising farmers and land-owners on rural property. Both addressed students graduating from the RAU in Cirencester.

Levi famously secured investment from Peter Jones and Richard Farleigh on the BBC 2 show with his Reggae Reggae Sauce, after opening his pitch with a song.

There’s still time to apply to start a degree course this year - applications can be made through UCAS until 30 June deadline.

Students applying through UCAS can make up to five university choices; anyone wishing to apply after the deadline will have to do so through Clearing (the process of matching applicants with unfilled places).

Innovation Facilitation Event at the RAU

On behalf of the Farmer-led Innovation Network (FLIN), the Royal Agricultural University (RAU) and the Innovative Farmers organised an event at the University’s Rural Innovation Centre, Harnhill, to explore best practice in facilitating farmer innovation. Developed by FLIN, the event was open to its members and others involved in this growing field.

The aim of the day was not only to examine and share best practice in facilitating farmer-led innovation but to garner examples and identify the skills and competencies required to effect it.

Royal Agricultural University ranked seventh in UK for student satisfaction

The Royal Agricultural University has risen to become one of the top ten Universities in the UK - and the top-ranked University in the South West - for student satisfaction.

The RAU scored 89% in the recent National Student Survey (NSS) 2019 - up 7% from last year - and is now ranked 7th  for overall satisfaction by the Times Higher Education*.

Work to turn historic railway works into Cultural Heritage Institute now underway

Swindon’s new Cultural Heritage Institute (CHI) has moved a significant step closer after work started to create a new learning centre in the town’s former Great Western Railway Carriage Works.

The new centre is part of the Royal Agricultural University (RAU). When opened in 2020 it will offer an exciting place to learn and develop the skills needed to work in heritage – a growing business sector which contributes billions to the UK economy through consultancy, regeneration and tourism.

Alex Dunn headed to New Zealand on a life-changing scholarship

All this happened to Royal Agricultural University graduate Alex Dunn, who isn’t from a farming background, and it can happen for you too.

Alex, from Reading, currently works for The Farmschool, in Hertfordshire, a charity which teaches school children about food, farming, and the environment.

School Farms Network Education Alliance conference returns to the RAU

A network that supports farming within schools and promotes land-based careers to young people will again host its annual conference at the Royal Agricultural University (RAU).

The School Farms Network Education Alliance (SFNEA) is a partnership between the RAU and the School Farms Network (SFN), which now consists of more than 116 school farms across the UK.

The group comes together for the third annual SFNEA conference this summer, with the aim of encouraging and inspiring outdoor learning and land-based education in schools and communities.
